Useful Molecular Biology Homepages

A fully comprehensive listing of many molecular biological databases is available from Nucleic Acids Research and any novel requirements should be searched there. A hard copy of this list can also be found in the New England Biolabs catalogue. Most of the commonly used databases are:

• SEQNET Homepage  BBSRC funded biological database and analysis service at Daresbury Computer Laboratory, England.
• EMBL Homepage   The European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. Provides access to a wide range of databases and sequence analysis services.
• NCBI Homepage   The National Center for Biotechnological Information, where you can find out about their work and use their database services, including BLAST and ENTREZ.
• GENBANK. Complete database of nucleotides and proteins.
• Submission of updates to Genbank sequences by EMail
• TIGR Microbial Database.  Range of complete microbial genome sequences.
• ExPasy Homepage   The Home page of the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics
• Protein Information Resource(PIR)
• Barton Group Homepage   Geoff Barton's group at Oxford; host to useful information on sequence analysis and developer of several computer analysis packages.
• The Bielefeld University Bioinformatics Server
• Pedro's Biomolecular Research Tools   A comprehensive list of molecular biology resources on the Web
• The Pseudomonas genome project   This is being done as a collaborative project for P.aeruginosa PAO1, mainly as a result of its role as an opportunistic pathogen in cystic fibrosis. However it is a close taxonomic relative of soil saprophytic P.putida and P.fluorescens,and shares many of its catabolic pathways.
• The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG)   This gives links to many of the major genome projects and will also identify genes/enzymes of major metabolic pathways which have been identified from the genome sequence
• REBASE, the restriction enzyme database. comprehensive information on restriction and related enzymes.
